In light of the recent howler in the Bahamas, we thought we would share some top tips to save you following in the footsteps of the Fyre Festival fiasco.
Firstly, don’t promise what you can’t deliver
It’s a simple fact you learn from an early age; making outlandish promises you can’t keep isn’t going to get you very far… Of course aim high but be realistic so that everyone’s on the same page from the get go. And above all, avoid those empty promises!
If it all goes a bit Pete Tong
As with anything, you can’t always count on it being plain sailing but rule number one is keep your cool! Sometimes easier said than done but as long as you’re on your toes and fully prepared, most on-site issues can be resolved with some creative quick and sensible troubleshooting.
Think outside the box. It’s a cliché, but it’s worth it. No one size fits all so always try to be innovative and bespoke to the job in hand. If you’re drawing a blank, involve others. It always helps to throw ideas around and have a sounding board. Remember often the best ideas are born over that catch up cuppa in the kitchen and developed into something great.
Have a little chat
Communication is key! Events managers are people’s people so keep talking to everyone and always be accessible for a conversation about the event. An on-site critique can be the stuff of nightmares, but if it lasts 30 seconds and could be a positive change – bring it on!
Take it on board
It’s unlikely you’ll be running an event by yourself (we wish you all the best if you are!) so make the most of the team and the suppliers you’re working with. Don’t try and be Jack of all trades – listen to the experts and take their advice. Leave that sound check to the AV aficionados.
If you’re happy, then the team around you will be too. A smile goes a long way to encourage that extra mile which can only lead to great things – exceeding expectations and blowing guests away. Remember this can go both ways, so if you’ve got a frown on, it could lead to a downward spiral.
At the end of an event there is no better feeling than knowing you’ve pulled off something amazing, even if it’s been a challenge. High fives all round!
